A Hot Mess
You start at trail 0, which is also named 1. A few yards later you are on A. You can take a detour on F, Alternative A later on, and then be back on A again. So who came up with this bizarre, alphanumeric trail system? I dunno. Probably the same meth head who who put the picnic table just a few yards from the stinky port-a-potty!
And, you know what? I ate there anyway!
Why is Hiking Price’s Scrub Still So Cool?
And that’s kind of what hiking Price’s Scrub Greenway Loop in Micanopy Florida is like. It’s not great. But it’s there, and it’s still fun. You can get a hike in, log some miles, and enjoy nature. Because for all its scabs and lack of views, it’s a “can do” trail system. You won’t get lost here. The trails are wide – cars could pass – and there’s not much water around. So you won’t get eaten by ticks and mosquitoes.
On top of that, the earth is compacted. There’s little sweet sand, so trail biking and horseback riding are definitely on the table. I got in about 6.5 miles hiking but could have gone much further following the spur you see on my AllTrails map above. The first loop you see – which is E Loop – added about an extra 3/4 mile, and there the sand was sweet. It was a nice extra workout.
I recommend hiking in cooler months or cloudy days since most of the trail is in open sun. The exception is the top loop (A again? Alternative A) form a canopy along your midpoint. The only downside is you’ll be close to I-75 with its noise. In warmer months, of course there are wildflowers and butterflies to see, but I’m glad I went in January.
Is this a no-miss trail system? No. Will I visit again? Maybe. If you are nearby and want to put in some miles of hiking, biking or equestrian, is it worth the visit? Definitely!
If I lived nearby, I could see myself hiking here weekly. It’s a can-do trail system. Keep your expectations in check, and you’ll get as much out of it as you put into it.
