Courthouse and Jail Rock
Hiking Location at Seybolt Park Near Bridgeport, Nebraska
You can see Courthouse and Jailhouse Rocks from miles around, rising majestically in an otherwise flat landscape. It’s a local favorite stop for the kids in Bridgeport, near Scottsbluff and Gering in the Nebraska Panhandle at Morrill County. There’s no charge to enter, and a dirt road easily manageable even in a small, passenger car will get you there.
An engraved stone, like a tombstone, welcomes you to Seybolt Park, though I think everyone just calls the site Courthouse and Jail Rocks. You follow the road for maybe half a mile to a small parking area. You might only find about 15 minutes or so of walking and climbing, but it’s worth the visit because there’s no way you can take a bad picture. It’s really a very beautiful place, and you’ll want to look around at the horizons too full of pastoral scenery.
On a personal and perhaps humorous note: I met a young couple there, twenty or so years old. Very friendly, and talkative, as most people in the region are, but a bit skittish. I’d gotten out of my tiny passenger car, wearing a Tilley safari hat and carrying a bunch of equipment. They were afraid I was a cop…. So it’s a fair guess that maybe some local kids occasionally use natural herbs here. 😉
