This fun trail offers two mile loop through Ocala National Forest. Notably, it leads to an observation deck overlooking Salt Springs Run that connects Lake George and Lake Kerr, themselves fed by Saint Johns River. It tends to attract visitors on the weekend, but never more than a few cars. And you’ll find plenty of parking in the earthen parking area.
It’s one of those nice places where there are always people – a jogger on a morning run, a nice little family with their dog – but never crowds or noisy tourists.
Yes, the hiking trail is short. You get back to your car after only 2 miles of hiking. But the observation deck over Salt Springs Run can hold you for awhile watching boats and birds.
There are a few pines, but this area of the forest is mostly old growth with lots of leafy evergreens. In fact, you’ll find plenty of shade on your morning jog or nature walk.
With so much else to see in the area, it’s a wonderful place to stop for a quick hike or run with a pretty destination.
