Maybe you came to Alto Lake Park northeast of Gainesville, Florida in Waldo for the fishing, boating, or to have a family picnic or reunion. But be sure to check out the hiking trails!
Near the south end of the parking lot, you will find the entrance to Longeleaf Ecology and Forestry Society (LEAFS) trail with some great hiking and views. Grab a brochure if they are available at the trail head but don’t let it fool you – this “half mile loop” intersects with many miles of trails, and you can spend awhile back there. You will find trees such as sweetgum and live oak, and flowers such as purpledisk sunflower, beach false foxglove, lots of American beautyberry, and plenty of birding opportunities. (Images below.)
Don’t miss the other LEAFS Stewardship Forest hiking trail nearby!
